Product Review: Human Nature Moisturizing Shampoo (Aloe Vera, Egg Whites, Guava)
April 16, 2009I first heard of the Human Nature line from my friend and colleague R., who blogs at PinoyBaby.com. As you can probably tell from the title of her blog, she’s a mother to a wonderful 5 month old baby boy, and she blogs about her experiences as a first-time mom. She had only good things to say about using Human Nature’s baby shampoo on her son, and I thought of giving it a try as well. I selected this particular variant of the many Human Nature shampoos because my hair tends to get dry easily, and because I get dandruff easily as well.
(please excuse the crappy lighting in this photo)
The first thing I noticed is how prominently it says on the label:
100% organic
100% Philippine ingredients
100% no harmful chemicals
And I thought to myself, “this might be the start of something good.”
Behind the label and inside the bottle is a clear, colorless shampoo, almost gel-like in consistency. I was a bit worried at first that the guava scent might be too strong–I have a dislike of shampoos that have strong fragrances, they make me dizzy–but it mild, clear guava scent was a pleasant surprise. It was in no way overpowering, and I actually started to look forward to its smell when taking an early morning shower. The gel-like consistency may be a bit disorienting, though, especially if you’re used to the consistency of commerical shampoos. My mom found it a bit difficult to squeeze the shampoo out of the bottle–but this is possibly because of the small size of the bottle I bought.
After two months of using this shampoo, I’m still satisfied with the results. True to the label’s claims that it has “no dandruff-causing residue,” I have not had an attack of dandruff. I love the light guava smell, too. And because it uses all-natural, all-organic ingredients, you can actually use this outdoors without worries–the ingredients naturally decompose without leaving any chemicals in the ground to contaminate our groundwater.
What impresses me the most about this shampoo, though, is the commitment that its makers have to making products that are responsible–if you visit the Human Nature website, it’s founders have a clear commitment to not just being environmentally responsible, by using ingredients that won’t contaminate our waters, but also to being socially responsible–Human Nature has a long-standing tie-up with Gawad Kalinga communities all over the country. Gawad Kalinga community members are involved at various stages of the production of the products, giving them skills, training, and livelihood, while other community members are distributors of the products, earning income in the process.
It inspires me to think that, by just buying something as ordinary as shampoo, I make an impact on the lives of so many Pinoys.
:)
Sizes and prices: 50ml (Php34.75), 100ml (Php59.75), 200ml (Php99.75). I bought the 100ml bottle.
Pros: Reasonably-priced. Organic. Pro-Pinoy. Pro-poor. Effective.
Cons: A bit inconvenient to order online, but it’s easy to get used to the process of ordering
How to buy: You can find Human Nature products online at the Human Nature Online Store and the Pinoy Baby Store. Human Nature also has a lot of direct-sales distributors, so you can visit them at their website and ask them about the distributor nearest you.
